Second iteration

After the first iteration of the R‑1 match, CaRMS publishes the positions that are still open and runs a second iteration. The window to apply is short. CaRMS’s second-iteration timeline (opens in a new tab) has the dates. This page is CaRMS’s list of open positions, filtered and linked to each program’s page.

“Competitive” seats are leftover CMG and IMG seats at one site, listed together: CaRMS’s second iteration treats them as a CMG program and an IMG program.

53 more programs are on CaRMS’s second-iteration list without a position count in the list of open positions. They are not shown here; CaRMS’s second-iteration list has them.

  • An open position is not a sign of a weak program and not a measure of your chances: seats go unfilled for location, stream eligibility and late quota changes. No applicant counts are published, so nothing here says how many people applied or ranked.
  • IMG-only, return-of-service and military seats cannot be taken by every applicant. Check the stream before you count a seat.
  • Quebec seats (“Regular”, “Particular”) follow a different match process and are not comparable with the rest of Canada.
  • CaRMS can change the list after posting (“Position streams may be subject to change”; listed positions may not take part in the second iteration). The numbers are those on the day the list was read.

From CaRMS’s list of positions open after the first iteration (opens in a new tab), read 17 Oct 2026. Independent of CaRMS: confirm every row with CaRMS before you decide.
